Anderson Inlet Angling Club

Inverloch Inc.

History

Anderson Inlet Angling Club was founded in 1959, when a group of fishermen held their first meeting over at Point Smythe. As the number of members grew, there was a need to find a location to enable the group to hold meetings and have their weigh-ins after each monthly competition.

In 1960 an application was put forward for permission to have a building placed on the site where it is now, opposite the Big 4 Caravan Park, on the corner of Cuttrise Street and The Esplanade.

The Committee of Management on the day hired Henry Donohue Removals to purchase a building on behalf of the club; the chosen building came from the Monash University which was part of the Talbot colony in Clayton. The building was a former infectious disease hospital, and then it was also used as a psychiatric ward! The cost to be paid by the Angling Club to Henry Donohue in 1962 was $600; the placement of the building was done by volunteers overseen by a qualified engineer. The building stands to this day with only a few alterations, the hall now incorporates a Bar Room and Barbeque Room.

The hall is owned by the Anderson Inlet Angling Club Committee of Management, as the Anderson Inlet Angling Club is a not-for-profit organisation. The club is run by volunteers who help maintain the building and everyday running of the club; this includes; Hall Hire, Cleaning of Hall; Garden Maintenance.

The Anderson Inlet Angling Club hires the hall to community groups, also the hall is avaible for hire for private functions. The hall has seen many a wedding service held on the foreshore, continued with the reception held in the hall, art shows, birthdays, family get-togethers, funerals and wakes.

The hall is a Licenced Premises. All money raised goes back into maintaining and upkeep of the hall.

About Anderson Inlet, Inverloch

Once an important port, Inverloch is a Gaelic word meaning entrance to a lake. 143km South-east from Melbourne, 9 metres above sea level, ancient midden discovered in area is testimony to the seafood diet of the Bunarong Aborigines. The Bonkoolawoola people are also thought to have hunted in the region.

The first white settler in the district was Samuel Anderson who discovered the Inlet’s existence while exploring the coast after he settled at Bass River in 1835. The area was opened for selection in 1870s, and Inverloch became a port for the shipment to Melbourne of black coal, which was mined at nearby Wonthaggi. Shipping activities declined following the development of rail and road transport.

Anderson Inlet Angling Club and Committee would like to thank our sponsors, for without them we would not be able to keep the club up and running:
