THREATENED SPECIES

The Flora and Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act 1988 lists threatened fish, including crustacea, which may not be taken, traded or kept without a licence, permit or authorisation issued under the Act. A Recreational Fishing Licence does not permit the taking of FFG listed species.

Species caught for bait
No listed species of fish, invertebrates or other organisms listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, or species listed under the Wildlife Act 1975, may be taken for use as fishing bait without a licence, permit or authorisation issued under these acts. Authorisations made under the FFG act allow recreational fishing for Murray cod, Murray spiny crayfish, Glenelg spiny crayfish, Macquarie perch, freshwater catfish, silver perch and golden perch, and the use of flat-headed galaxias, flat-headed gudgeon and western carp gudgeon as bait under specified conditions, see also size and catch limits here. All other listed species are fully protected.

Protected species, Fisheries Act 1995
Great white shark, seahorses, seadragons and pipefish are declared protected species under the Fisheries Act 1995. Taking or possession of these species is prohibited without a permit issued under the Act.
