DOLPHINS IN PORT PHILLIP BAY

Dolphins are found along the Victorian coastline, with resident populations in Port Phillip.

There are two laws which protect dolphins from harassment and disturbance in Victoria, the Wildlife Act 1975 and Wildlife (Whale) Regulations 1975.

The Ticonderoga Bay Sanctuary Zone, north-west of Portsea, is defined in the regulations and extends from Police Point to the Cattle Jetty ruins and 500m from the shoreline. Dolphins use this area for feeding and refuge.

Regulations apply to recreational fishers, commercial fishers and private watercraft operators, including jet skiers, when coming in contact with dolphins.

  • When operating a boat you must not approach within 100m of a dolphin.

  • When swimming you must not approach within 30m of a dolphin.

  • If using a motorised swimming aid or surfboard you must not approach within 30m of a dolphin.
