Victorian Shipwrecks

Photo: Barrel lid at the wreck of the William Salthouse (1841) in Port Phillip Bay.

There are more than 700 historic shipwrecks in Victorian waters. Protected zones have been declared for 8 particularly fragile historic shipwrecks. Seven of these are in Port Phillip.

Some shipwrecks are marked with a pile or buoy(s) that identifies the wreck and boundaries of its protected zone. While some sites are not marked with navigational markers, all protected zones are marked on Admiralty charts.

It is an offence to enter a protected zone, this includes fishing, trawling or any underwater activity such as diving.

It is an offence to damage, disturb or interfere with any historic shipwreck. This includes anchoring on it or removing objects from the wreck.

Remember Protected Zone = No Entry (without a permit).
