Lake Wartook is at 99% capacity and been providing some mixed results for anglers targeting this lake, Launching your boat from the boat ramp is no problem, and it is the only lake where launching a boat from the ramp is possible. Brown trout ranging from 800grm to 2 kilo have been taken on mud eye, scrubbies, gudgeon, Lures and flies. Most productive time over the past couple of weeks has been toward the evening. Bank fisherman is finding a few hot spots along the wall, around the old tower, the new outlet channel, and the area between the second and third seat. Bear Island and Lang lands. Redfin have remained elusive, with only the odd small redfin around 400grms taking lures. Winged styled lures like loftys are favoured, with stump jumpers and rapalas also getting a good workout. A lot of the new release trout are reacting to anglers lures and baits, follow the simple guide lines of catch and release for these little tackers to reduce there stress and ensure their survival. Accommodation is available in the Wartook Valley for anglers looking for somewhere to stay, you are only 15 minutes from the lake, all forms of accommodation are available, camping caravan parks, cabins or houses, or fully catered for B&Bs.
Lake Fyans is probably one of the favoured destinations in the region for targeting trout and redfin, due to the fact that accommodation is right on the lake, and the lake does produce trophy trout. Low water levels, and discoloured water, have deterred some anglers from targeting Fyans. The lake has been producing some nice trout ranging from 1 to 3 kilo, and again all fishing techniques have accounted for fish being taken. The area in front of the yacht club is a favoured destination for fly fisherman, and the inlet channel. Boat anglers working the timber around the tower are in a favoured area. Mud eye's and gudgeon are top baits here. A tip with Fyans is just before the weather changes, the fish will react big time. As our weather has been all over the place lately we are experiencing all seasons in one day. Launching a boat from the bank can be a bit of a problem for two-wheel drive after rain. 4-wheel drive will have no problems launching a boat.
Lake Lonsdale may only have 10% but it's drawing a lot of local attention again this year, with yabbies going wild. Good size yabbies the size of beer bottles are being taken. The tip from locals is the hour before dark seems to produce the best results. Remember you have limits on what you can take with the yabbies, whole yabbies 20litres is your limit, and just the tails you are limited to 5 litres, and drop nets are the only nets you are allowed to use.
Remember to play it safe by the water, and if your in the area, drop into the Wartook Pottery Tearooms, and I will be happy to put you onto fish. We are situated on the Northen Grampians Road halfway between Halls Gap and Horsham.
