Gee next they will say all piers and beaches will be smoke free areas because kids are around

SMOKING outdoors will be outlawed along entire streets in Frankston City Council is preparing to impose blanket bans along three busy open-air shopping strips, including opposite the train station. Lighting up in the designated exclusion zones during the planned six-month trial could cost defiant smokers fines up to $110.Should smoking be banned in public places? Vote in our poll and have your say in the comments below Frankston Mayor Christine Richards said the bid to banish cigarette smoke from streets would probably upset some people, but the health benefits were worth any flak. "We want to make people think twice about the way they conduct themselves in the public domain, and who they are affecting," she said. "There are a huge number of deaths from tobacco in Victoria each year, more than from alcohol and traffic accidents and illicit drugs. We want to do something about it." Cr Richards said the hefty fines would be imposed by council officers, but details were still to be decided. Victorian laws already ban smoking in pubs, cafes, shopping centres, gaming venues and workplaces, on some beaches, on covered train platforms, and in cars carrying children. The council has voted to run an education campaign and consult the community before starting the trial in September. Cr Richards said the proposed laws were a glimpse of the future for Victorian smokers, and she hoped other councils would adopt similar measures. But Alistair Wardle - the only one of nine councillors to vote against the trial - described the move as "a bit extreme". "My main concern is that it is an infringement of civil liberties," Cr Wardle said. "It's getting trivial, booking people for smoking on the pavement. It's open space - if people see someone smoking, they can walk around them."Cr Wardle said he feared the rules would "create aggravation and annoyance" among smokers, would be difficult to police, and would simply shift smokers and their litter elsewhere.Local pharmacy worker Shelly Puddy said she doubted tobacco addicts would take much notice of new laws."I don't know if they'll stop for anything," she said."It would be nice to not have to breathe in a cloud of smoke as you walk along ... but I wish the council luck in making it happen."Trader Jenni Le said the smoke-free zones - two malls and the western side of Young St - were "a bit stupid"."It seems a bit silly to ban it on one side of the street and not the other. Aren't the smokers going to cross the road?" she said.Newsagent Vasilis Aroutzidis welcomed the proposed bans."I notice the smoke when I walk through it, and I am a smoker. It must be bad for non-smokers," he said.A report by council staff said the bans would be complicated and noted community concerns about over-regulation."Smoking is a legal activity and people who smoke are not criminals, nor are they undesirable individuals to have in commercial precincts," it said.
And yes I am a smoker and it is my choice but I think their going over board on this plan, Frankston as I know is full of druggies and crims anyway, so why don't they ban them first and see what happens.

OMG!
I'm a smoker too and quite frankly I find it hard to breath at all in Frankston what with all the pollution from the cars..... perhaps they should ban all vehicles from the area too so the pedestrians don't have to breath in those toxic car fumes......

I'm not a smoker and don't really care what smokers get up to.
However I hate seeing them flick butts into the bay on piers when fishing next to them and I hate being downwind of one when fishing on a pier.
I try and get out to get a bit of fresh air and a fish sometimes on a pier and inevitably some bloke will arrive, plonk himself next to me, cast all over me and then open up a can of Woodstock and light up.

I'm a smoker, i don't produce butt's though as i smoke a pipe.
I hate people who litter in any capacity, when i go fishing i am disgusted by a lot of the rubbish left by other people, including fisho's! I have been known to take other peoples rubbish away with me when i leave.
On the banning, in covered areas like under awnings and support it, but in open air its just stupid!
The people who make these laws are so flaming ignorant.Let sit back for a moment, and think about the MANY other carcinogenic substances we are exposed to every day! Some of them more powerful than a little second hand cigarette smoke.
Do these lawmakers have any clue of the content of the dust produced by the brake pads/liners on cars, motorcycles, trucks and trains?
These things contain many know carcinogens.Truck drum liners for instance, at least a few years back when i was working for a place servicing them, contain ASBESTOS!!!
For those of you that are unfamiliar with the workings of brakes, the pads, shoes or liner are designed to be the wearing part as they do their job,in the process they release dust! This stuff is very bad for you, think about the amount we are all exposed to every day!
Many people don't realize how nasty this dust is,or you may think if it was that bad somebody would do something about it! Well the problem is that the alternatives discovered to date either cost far to much to manufacture or wear out much faster, in turn increasing the cost and inconvenience. So they just keep on making them with the nasties!
But its ok to ignore all this and penalize us smokers while ignoring some of the real nasties out there...

dunxy
I was fishing @ Frankston Pier today, my first time in a year, and first time since they "rebuilt" it.
I noticed that, finally, they have put a rubbish bin up the end of the pier.
Unfortunately, no one seems to know what it is or its purpose.....
"But its ok to ignore all this and penalize us smokers while ignoring some of the real nasties out there..."
Yes exactly the point I was trying to make but doing badly LOL.
I guess they just like keeping the focus, and blame for pollution, on smokers.
If they were THAT concerned about it, it would be illegal but *gasp* imagine the dive in revenue if they did that. 70% of the cost of ciggy's is tax. That's a whole lot of money for the government coughers *ahem, oops* coffers.....

Im a smoker and I believe its ridiculous to fine people who are in the open smoking .

Considering we were targeting Garfish, we sure as heck caught a lot of mullet.
Pretty big mullet actually, so if anyone likes to stock up on mullet for bait (or to eat... *ugh*) then head on to Frankston Pier!
All up between 2 of us we caught 1 garfish, 3 bay trout and 11 mullet.
All fish were being quite fussy. If you saw the float sink under water, you had to wait until it popped up again, then went down again, THEN you could strike.
If you tried it any earlier, then you wouldn't get them. It was like they were just "mouthing" it the first time, then taking it the 2nd time.
Despite not getting as many of our target fish as we had hoped, it was just lovely to be sitting there in the cool sea breeze enjoying the sights and sounds associated with fishing on the pier. As I said, it's been a year since i last fished there. I was having severe fishing withdrawls, so even the mullet provided some entertainment and scratched my itch.. for now. Some of those mullet were quite big and pulled like horses on light gear!
If the weather is nice next week we'll try again. We target the gars so we can use them as baits on the surf.

ash
We fish during the day, mostly because we are limited what with a kid at school.
Night fishing for gars when the gars are 'running hot' is preferable, that's when you catch the bigger ones.
As we catch them for use as bait we're not that worried about catching big ones. We like nice "bait sized" gars, about the size of pilchards.
We fish up at the end of the pier, but the precise location we choose depends on the wind and tide i.e. we need to be able to cast the lightweight float set up plus we don't want it blowing back towards us or too far sideways etc. It's not uncommon to have to move locations 2 or 3 times in a 4-5 hour session just due to changing conditions.

I'm with makka only I'm not fishing
I think smoking should be banned from all public places. Clearly I am a non-smoker. There's nothing worse than the choking smell of smoke floating around in public whether it be outside a restaurant or on a pier. You can still get the nicotine hit without the smoke - chew tobacco or use patches, or smoke in your car (without the kids of course!).
Drinking may have many social problems attached, but a glass of beer or wine held by the person next to you doesn't interfere with you like a cloud of smoke floating over you, which happens even if the smoker is 10 metres away. So if you chew it, or use patches, go for it - it doesn't affect the people standing near you.
I always think of an old Mad magazine sketch - a guy asking the bloke sitting next to him "you dont mind my smoke do you?" as he lights a cigarette... bloke next to him takes a sip of coke, sprays it in his face, and says "I won't mind your smoke, if you don't mind my coke". That's the best analogy I can think of!
