HONDA ANNOUNCE HIGH HORSEPOWER OUTBOARD UPGRADE
Leading four-stroke marine engine manufacturer Honda, has enhanced three of its flagship outboard models the BF175, BF200 and range-topping BF225 for greater performance, efficiency and aesthetic appeal.
Through the use of a revised Electronic Control Unit (ECU) featuring an air feedback sensor and Honda's industry exclusive Lean Burn Feedback System, fuel consumption in the new models is reduced by five per cent over the previous range.
The result is even more impressive when compared to competitors' outboards, according to Honda internal factory tests, the upgraded Honda range offers a 14 per cent improvement in fuel consumption against two-stroke Direct Injection (DI) counterparts and 10 per cent better performance than competing four-stroke models.
According to Honda Marine Manager, Tim Davies, this improvement in efficiency amounts to significant savings in operating costs.
"Given the current high price of fuel, savings in the order of 14 per cent compared to some of our competitors is very worthwhile, particularly after long hours on the water," Mr Davies said.
"Using Honda's Lean Burn Feedback System, the engine's air-fuel ratio is adjusted according to speed, load, barometric pressure and air temperature to maximise efficiency throughout the entire rpm range, whether cruising or trolling.
"A top mounted Linear Air Fuel sensor works with the engine command system to also help return the impressive fuel efficiency."
In other improvements to the BF175, BF200 and BF225 models, the gearshift control has been fine-tuned by expanding the 'neutral zone'. This provides smoother gear shift between neutral, forward and reverse at low speeds (below 1000 rpm).
The adoption of a new throttle cam also aids throttle response in low-speed range while patented non-linear rubber mounts provide smoother operation at all speeds.
Mr Davies said the high horsepower Honda engines were the most technologically advanced available and the recent upgrades would cement their reputation for performance, reliability and efficiency.
"The BF175, BF200 and BF225 all feature a 3.5 litre, 24-valve V6 SOHC engine providing smooth power and torque under all conditions while Multi-Point Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) delivers optimum fuel/air mix to each cylinder for easy starting, instant throttle response and low fuel consumption.
"The range-topping BF225 is packed with VTEC power, the same valve timing system Honda uses in its Formula 1 race cars. VTEC provides smooth operation at all engine rpm and when higher revs (4500 rpm) are reached, an outstanding boost of torque and power is felt."
Another unique feature of the high horsepower BF range is Honda's Engine Alert System which monitors engine function via 18 separate sensors, alerting the operator of overheating, low oil pressure, over-rev, battery condition and critical engine functions.
For increased longevity and appearance, the range offers 4-Front Corrosion Protection. A patented 'Double Sealed' multi-layered paint process, sacrificial anodes and stainless steel technology, along with waterproof connectors, all enhance corrosion protection.
Honda's strong environmental credentials again come to the fore in its upgraded range with the three models meeting strict CARB 2008 and EPA 2006 ultra low emission compliance.
With an exclusive advanced four stroke model range spanning capacities from 2 to 225 horsepower, Honda has set the benchmark for quiet, reliable, easy starting, powerful yet efficient outboard engines.
