MUSTAD’S ‘HAPUKA RIG’ FOR DEEP, HEAVY FISHING

Mustad has introduced another ready-made rig, designed for  heavyweight deepwater fishing. Mustad’s Hapuka Rig was originally designed for hapuka fishing in New Zealand but is gaining interest from Australian anglers.  Hapuka do occur in some Australian locations but the rig is equally good on many other deepwater species as well as dhufish in WA.

The Mustad Hapuka Rig is based on dual heavy circle hooks which have proved very effective when bait fishing for bucket-mouthed deepwater species. Once hookup has been achieved, the hooks tend to stay in place, even when the line goes slack (which often happens when the fish’s swim bladder blows and the fish floats towards the surface. Luminous tube is used on each dropper as an attractor.

The Mustad Hapuka Rig comes in three line/hook sizes: 200lb x 12/0; 400lb x 14/0; 400lb x 16/0.
