AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS -
SAVE OUR BAY PROTEST
In protest against next week’s dredging of Port Phillip Bay, Ocean Kayaks
Australia (OKA), in association with Blue Wedges Coalition and local supporters
invite the community to celebrate this year’s clear, clean bay waters with a peaceful
but poignant kayak paddle.
From 10am onwards up to 25 kayakers will stage a paddle at Elwood Beach in
protest against the planned dredging process.
OKA invites families and friends – experienced and first-timers alike - to come along
for a free morning of kayaking to experience, first-hand, the beauty of Port Phillip Bay.
Adult and children’s life jackets will be available.
OKA is a new business on the Port Phillip foreshore hiring out kayaks at five beach
locations.
Once dredging starts, it is here for the long haul and, the bay will never be the same
again. From next week toxic silt will be dumped in the bay relentlessly for years to
come. Fish stocks and plant life will decline, the water quality will change.
Kayakers paddled with the dolphins, only 50metres from the shore at Elwood last
week. If a clean, clear bay is a priority to you and your family, come to Elwood beach
on Saturday morning to enjoy, perhaps for the last time, the bay as we have known it.
