From the OFFICE OF THE Anchorage Marina

GREATER ACCESS TO WILLIAMSTOWN WATERFRONT

Locals and visitors would enjoy greater access to the Williamstown waterfront under proposed plans to rejuvenate the area.

The proposal, which includes the development of the derelict Knights Slipway site and
potential marina upgrade to the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club and Hobson’s Bay Yacht
Club, would open up a section of the waterfront that has been off-limits to the public for over 100 years, allow for the ecologically-sound expansion of both clubs and significantly increase facilities in the area.

Developer Nelson Place Marinas’ spokesperson Scott O’Hare said the boutique development would transform the area “from the ugly duckling into a beautiful swan”.

“I’ve grown up in Williamstown and I’m all for improving the aesthetic appeal and
functionality of the waterfront, while maintaining the area’s unique charm,” Mr O’Hare said.
“The old Knights Slipway was a pivotal business in Williamstown’s maritime history and
the site has now been vacant for nearly 10 years.

“We plan to continue the traditional use of the site for the provision of marine services – a
slipway, marine workshops and services, boat sales, retail and office space.”

Mr O’Hare’s family has owned and operated the nearby Anchorage Restaurant and
Marina for the past 25 years and recently constructed a new floating marina at The Strand site.

Adhering to best environmental practices, Nelson Place Marinas’ proposal includes
undertaking a feasibility study to change berths at both the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club and Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club from fixed ‘stick’ marinas to more environmentally-friendly floating marinas.

“Not only will this preferred marina technology increase the size of each club’s marina
and improve the financial prospects of each club, it will create a public boardwalk across the three sites… there’s also the possibility of a new beach,” Mr O’Hare said.

“We’re very much in the early stages of discussing on-water concepts and seek a strong
partnership with our neighbours to create a workable solution for all concerned.”
Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club members voted overwhelmingly in a recent general
meeting to commit to further develop the concept with Nelson Place Marinas, while Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club intends to call a similar meeting very soon.

Nelson Place Marinas’ purchase of the site will be completed next month.
