From the Minister Responsible for Fisheries

Friday June 27, 2008

JUNIOR ANGLERS HAVE SOME GREAT HOLIDAY OPTIONS

More than 13,000 advanced yearling rainbow trout and 700 premier rainbow trout have been released into 44 small lakes across Victoria just in time for the school holidays.

The Minister Responsible for Fisheries, Joe Helper, said the latest fish stocking was part of the Brumby Government’s Family Fishing Lakes program and the Go Fishing in Victoria - Premier Lakes program.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to give our young people an excellent opportunity to feel the thrill of catching a fish,” Mr Helper said.

“The Family Fishing Lakes program is designed to coincide with the second and third term school holidays to make fishing more attractive for young anglers and their family during these times.

“The waters are usually selected because they provide easy bank side access and are close to urban centres or regional towns, giving people of all ages and mobility the opportunity to wet a line.”

Mr Helper said rainbow trout were stocked because they were relatively easy to catch and the fish being released were suitable for immediate capture.

“The numbers of rainbow trout released varies between 150 and 800 depending upon the size of the water, the proximity to other similar waters, the quality of access and other facilities present,” he said.

“In addition, small numbers of ex-broodstock fish from the Snobs Creek production facility, some weighing more than 3 kilograms, will be shared across all the Family Fishing Lakes.

The Family Fishing Lakes stocking program is part of the Brumby Government’s statewide stocking program that provides about 1.1 million fish annually to improve fishing opportunities for freshwater anglers.

The Premier Lakes that are regularly stocked with advanced and premier rainbow trout are Lillydale Lake (Lilydale), Eildon Pondage (Eildon), Kennington Reservoir (Bendigo), Jubilee Lake (Daylesford) and Lake Hyland (Churchill).
