FISHING LICENCE FEES TAKES STEPS TO BETTER ACCESS
Recreational anglers visiting the Surf Coast can now enjoy better access to Jump and Artillery
Rocks, near Lorne thanks to the installation of steps at both locations, Executive Director
Fisheries Victoria, Dr Peter Appleford said today.
Dr Appleford said more than 20 steps had been constructed at each location, making it easier for
anglers to chase salmon, snapper, trevally and sweep.
“Access to Artillery Rocks previously meant negotiating a slippery goat track,” he said.
“Guard rails have also been installed along the steeper sections of each stairway, further
improving access for those who may have found the climb difficult in the past.”
Secretary for the Association of Geelong and District Angling Clubs John Hotchin said the steps
are a welcome addition to two popular Victorian fishing spots.
“Providing anglers with suitable access routes from the Great Ocean Road, both stairways will
assist in the protection of surrounding vegetation and reduction of erosion,” Mr Hotchin said.
“These steps are another great example of how revenue from the recreational fishing licences, and in this case the Commonwealth Government’s Recreational Fishing Community Grants
Program, is being used to improve fishing opportunities in Victoria.”
Since the commencement of the annual Victorian Recreational Fishing Grant Program in 2001,
almost 200 projects totalling over $6.7 million have been funded.

The construction of steps at Jump and Artillery Rocks will help anglers access the rock platform to pursue salmon, snapper, trevally and sweep.
