20 November 2007

Well snapper season is truly underway with great reports from both Port Phillip and Western Port, but the best fishing news is from the east of the state, Port Welshpool, McLauglins, Manns Beach, and Port Albert, with excellent catches of snapper, salmon and gummies.

Further up the coast towards Seaspray and Golden Beach, fish are there in good numbers,
but anglers are having big trouble with the weed. The only chance to fish is right on high tide when the weed tends to seperate, but for only a short period of time.

The good news this week comes from Mornington Pier with catches of salmon up to 4lb.
Lure casting is the best method but take different colours like blue, green and silver lures,
or take 2 rods and cast a line for snapper.

When fishing a pier or the rocks it's always best to think of where you could land a good fish, or more importantly, if you were to fall in where would you get out. Most piers have a landing or a ladder at the side of the pier.

Frankston Pier has the gars on again, and they are great fun for the kids. I like to use pipi for bait and my berley is made of crushed up pilchard and bread crumbs. Toss only small amounts near your float, and keep an eye on how your float sits in the water. If it starts to move around a little without bobbing down give it a strike, gars can suck the bait off the hook without taking the float down. On a hot night, float fishing for gars is so exciting and fun for the whole family.

Other great fishing for kids is the Patterson River, with a running sinker rig and sandworms for bait. When l'm teaching kids fishing I always use a rod holder that you push into the sand. You can't have eyes everywhere and a rod holder can save a rod going into the water.

if you need advice on fishing for kids or advice on tackle, drop me an email, I would love to help out.

Regards,

BENNO
