PORT PHILLIP BAY
G’day fishviccers.
The bay is fishing fantastically at present with great numbers of both whiting and pinkies; the only problem seems to be the supply of pipi which has all but dried up!
But, those who have been able to grasp a kilo or two have been braining them!
Mt Martha
Here’s an email I received from friend Jasen:
Hi Al, went fishing off Mt Martha at a friend "Fishbowl's" spot which he gave me a few years ago, and which I've tried on many trips but only ever managed a gummy or two in the past. Before heading down he gave me the word that the reds were in the area. He got around thirty fish within a 3 week period all - big fish as well. That’s great fishing in anyones book. So on my next day off Shell, Jemma and myself all headed down to Rye. I was fishing by myself the next morning when I got my PB PPB red. It was weighed in at 9.4kg at the Rye Fishooked Tackle and Bait Supplies, and I'm pretty sure it was a male fish. I got him on a red rocket that I got from you the day before heading down to the caravan, so a big thanks to you too! A good friend Anthony was fishing for whiting close to Rosebud when he heard me on the radio telling another friend, Dave, about the red I just boated. I didn’t realise my mate Anthony was also fishing down there so I told him where I was. We share all our spots so he knew exactly where I was, and within 15 mins he was soon anchored nearby. He got 3 reds within 30 mins all around 6-7kg. Dave and I went again the next morning to get another 4 between us and I got another nice fish around 8.5kg. Also, I've included photos of our last trip off Altona with Anthony in one of the photos. We got those around the Spoil Grounds on gars and silvers. Hopefully the next run off fish isn’t too far away. Until next time, happy fishing, Jase.

Spoil Grounds
There are still a few good reds to be taken providing your'e on the water early. Baits of red rockets, pilchards and silvers have seen fish in the 3-4kg bracket, with lots of smaller 500g -1kg fish available. The same area has seen large schools of gars, so it pays to have a float rig out while you're waiting for an inquiry from a red.

St Kilda
Good numbers of pinkies to 1.5kg have been taken fishing near the channel. Friend Rick from the Greenvale Angling Club took 14 great pinkies from 30cm-45cm while fishing with his kids. The pick of the baits was salted bluebait fished with minimal lead to the hook.
Williamstown/Altona
Anthony Tsarkis has been getting good bags of whiting to 38cm fishing Altona bay. The pick of the baits has been mussel, while late in the day has seen the best action.
I ventured out off Altona recently to have a go on the big red-billed gars which have inundated the bay in the last few weeks. Fishing out from Altona Pier on Tuesday with Geoff Howard, we manage 30 plump red bills before the stiff southerly blew us off the water.

Geoff Howard has been getting into the gars off Altona.
Werribee
Great numbers of whiting have been on offer with many anglers getting their bags.
The grass beds between the ramp and Kirks has been very consistent, with fish averaging 28cm-32cm. A good starting depth has been around 6m. While fishing this area it pays not to berley too hard as the hoards of undersize pinkies can soon have you pulling your hair out!
Docklands
Andrew Howard has been chasing the jewies on a regular basis around the Telstra Dome using live mullet. Although he hasn’t turned a reel on a big silver beast yet, an angler fishing next to him landed a great mulloway of 8kg on a mullet fillet.
There have also been some great pinkies taken under the Bolte Bridge to 1.5kg on mullet and pilchard.
Good luck, and catch a big one!!
