Port Phillip Bay & Lake Eildon
3 April 2008

With Allan Allwood

PORT PHILLIP BAY

St Kilda Pier
The pier at the present time is fishing fantastically, with good bags of quality sized pinkies to 45cm; best baits have been salted pilchards and fresh squid and mussel.

The pier has also been producing good numbers of bream to 800g; fresh mussel and pilchard fillets have been the pick of the baits.

Williamstown/Altona
Altona bay continues to produce great numbers of big gars, with pieces of prawn and flathead fillet fished 1 metre under a float working best.

The whiting have also turned it on with good bags of fish being taken late afternoon, with fish averaging 32cm-40cm taking baits of pipi and fresh mussel.

Werribee South King George whiting are real stonkers at present.

Point Cook/Werribee
The whiting are going well out from Point Cook. I fished out from the point recently with friend Andrew Howard for 16 whiting, 5 pinkies and a stack of gars. The average size of the whiting is exceptional with all fish between 38cm-40cm. All fish were taken taken on pipis.

Charlie Sant has also been getting great bags fishing the same general area, but states it may take a few drops to find them.

"Where did that fish just go?"

Kirks Point/Geelong
Kirks has been as productive as ever with good pinkies taken over long reef on cut pilchard and squid. The pinkies have been up to a couple of kilos with the hours of low light producing the top results.

The area around Bird Rock (Avalon) has been firing with good bags of both whiting and pinkies at first and last light.

Western Port Elephants
Andrew Krinos and friends John and Andrew fished off Rhyll (Elephant Triangle) for a mixed bag which consisted of elephant fish, whiting, pinkies and leatherjacket. They caught all of their elephants on fresh squid.

Eildon Region

Pondage
Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle reports that along with trout coming out of the ponds, some great sized redfin to 1.5kg have been taken by anglers fishing with scrubworms around the main bridge and footy oval.

I fished the ponds on Saturday with Andrew Howard and my son Aidan. Starting off at Bourke Street at first light saw Andrew open his account with 2 rainbows in the first half, taken on pink Tassie devils. Then things went very quiet so we decided to give the upper pond a go. Fishing around the cemetery we managed to nail 9 plump rainbows between 1kg-2kg while bait fishing with Powerbait; the colours we used were pink, lemon twist and sherbet, all of which caught fish.

The best fishing period for us was between 11am-12 pm. One interesting thing to note was 3 of the 9 had no fin clips and were possibly lake fish that found their way in the ponds via the gates.

Goulburn River
I had a spin in the river late Saturday afternoon upstream from Thornton, for 2 rainbows - a 1kg fish, followed by a solid 2kg rainbow, taken on a Rapala.

The river seems well stocked after the accidental release of water from the pondage a few weeks back, with large brood stock being caught frequently.

Lake Eildon
Garry also reports that the lake’s golden perch have been on the job with good captures of fish taken from the Fraser National Park area, as well as some good yellas taken near the second wall on scrubworms and yabbies.
The redfin have been okay, with best reports coming from those that are jigging with icejigs around Jews Creek.

The trout have been very quiet and reports of fish infected with anchor worm common.
Over the next few weeks the trout fishing should pick up. Gaz also notes that the alliance boat ramp (next to the wall) has a $2 launching fee, with all money going back into the ramp for a well needed upgrade.

Lake Eildon's second wall is well exposed!

Good luck, and catch a big one!!
