PORT PHILLIP BAY

Rye
Jason Cormio and friends have been regularly chasing the big gummies out from Rye over the last few weeks with great results. He has taken fish well over 20 kg on several outings while fishing in the black, with baits of eel and trevally accounting for the majority of bruisers taken.

The whiting are also going very well still with good bags of 40cm+ fish taken in the shallows along with good numbers of squid.

Williamstown/Altona
The pinky fishing has exploded out from Williamstown, in particular the area around the footy ground, with many anglers reaching their quota quite easily with fish ranging from just legal to 2kg. The best fishing has been late afternoon and into the evening, with a variety of baits used to great effect, cut pilchards being most popular. Out from Altona the cardinal mark has been going well for pinkies with some great yank flathead taken also.

Point Cook/Werribee
Good numbers of whiting and pinkies are still coming in from the regular haunts with the area around the RAAF Pier getting the most attention. Kirks has been a little hit and miss over the last week possibly due to professional netters hitting the area, hence scattering the schools and making them very skittish. Although, if it's pinkies you're after there seems to be unlimited quanties taken near the long reef area, but you must be on the water early - as soon as the sun's up they're gone!

Geelong
I ventured out with friend Geoff Howard recently off St Helens, after not turning a reel on the first mark (3m of water out from Avalon). I made the right decision to head a little deeper into 4.5m and fish the edge of the Corio channel. As the afternoon proceeded Geoff and I nailed 40 great whiting “between 34cm-38cm” on pipi, we also managed a couple of squid and leathjacket to add some variety to the bag.

The tide was on the run in (as they say in Corio, no run no fun). We had reached our quota just as it hit the top of the tide leaving the fish biting hard and fast. The pinkies are also fishing well in the channel out from Avalon. I spoke to a pair of anglers at the ramp who had several nice pinkies to 2.5kg on pilchards.

Eildon Region

Lake Eildon
The lake has really picked up since I last reported, with great numbers of rainbow and browns to 2kg taken by anglers trolling. I received an email from regular fishvic reader Andrew Wilson who has been getting some great fish on the troll, with one that pulled the scales down to 9lb. He also mentioned while the trout fishing is going great, the lakes yellowbelly population is still cooperating. He nailed two around the 1.5kg mark baitfishing scrubbies while having a spell from trolling.

I received a great report from the Praagh family fishing the lake recently. They managed some good rainbows whilst trolling Tassie devil lures, and a lovely cod (estimated at 10lb) that ate a spinner bait whilst young Campbell was working the undercut banks along a steep drop-off. The well conditioned cod was put back.

Campbell Van Praagh holding his spinnerbait caught cod from Lake Eildon in early April.  Fish was released.

Goulburn River
The river at present is flowing at 2000 meg with a temp of 16c. The river was fishing great before the reduction in flow earlier this week with all methods producing good numbers of both wild and brood stock fish. The fish should settle before the coming weekend and be back on the chew, the pick of the stretches are from the Breakaway Bridge up to the Crusher, and from Thornton to Snobs. Baits of maggot and scrubworm are working well, for the lure flickers floating bibbed minnows and Celtas should secure you a couple.

Good luck, and catch a big one!!
