Lake Mulwala
Fishing over the past week has picked up again with some good reports of Murray cod being taken. The top end of the lake around Bundalong has proved to be the most productive area. One couple landeda 24lb, 12lb and 7lb fish casting lures in this area which is a great return and better still the larger 2 fish were released. A few locals who are in the know are landing some nice yellowbelly in the mouth of the canal behind Shoreline Caravan Park.
Below Yarrawonga Weir
I haven't heard any reports of fish down this way over the last week but I don't think I would be far off the mark if I said that many undersize Murray cod, trout cod and yellowbelly can be caught using bait and you should be able to pick up the odd fish trolling and casting lures/spinnerbaits.
Cobram Area
Brought to you by Adrian Doyle from Cobram Outdoor Store & Disposals,
Ph 58722363.
Fishing around Cobram still remains steady with yellas being the main catch on cast lures with the odd legal size cod being picked up on bardies.
Personally, I fished the Kyabram Fishing Comp last weekend held at Morgan's Beech, Beeri. The fishing for the weekend was shocking with our boat only landing 1 undersize trout cod for 2 days solid fishing. This competition is one people should look out for in the future as it was very well run for a 1st up effort and you would never find better food at any fishing comp and that is one thing I can guarantee.
The comp had 186 competitors with 17 Murray cod, 11 yellowbelly and 3 redfin being weighed in. The largest Murray cod was caught by Les Croxford of Kyabram being 3.2kgs. This won Les a new boat. The major luck door prize of an 8hp Yamaha motor was won by Daisy Carlan of Kyabram. The competition was promoting Catch & Release.
Echuca Area
Brought to you by Garry & Jacinta Armstrong - Gone Fishing, 156 Hare St. Echuca, Ph 54824291.
Upstream of Echuca has seen a few yellas being picked up. With last weekend's shocking weather not many people ventured out and therefore not many reports to hand. We have no reports for below Echuca or the Torrumbarry area.
Swan Hill Area
Brought to you by Andrew Ash at Hunter Marine Swan Hill, Ph 50322320.
The Murray has risen 6-8" over the last 4 days that has seen the fish come on again. A fish of some 54lb was caught around the Balsa's Island area that is between Boundary Bend and Robinvale. The fishing downstream of Boundary Bend has been very productive. Kangaroo Lake is still fishing well around the north end for redfin. The best method being the use of minnows, if you can catch them around the weir area, or small yabbies. The fish being caught are up to the 2lb mark.
Benalla Area
Brought to you by Reg Smith from Harrison's Hardware Benalla, Ph 57621444.
Lake Mokoan has quitened off again over the last few days with fish still available but of no great size or number.
No Reports from Broken River with the river being fairly low.
Lake Nillahcootie is still producing redfin up to 2 1/2 lb. Best bait remains small yabbies.
Shepparton Area
Brought to you by Steve Trellfall and the boys at Shepp Outdoor Sports,
Ph 58216572.
The Goulburn River has been very consistent over the last month or two with some good yellas on shrimp and spinnerbaits with most cod caught struggling to reach the 50cm mark. People who are using worms as bait are having a lot of trouble being picked off by the small silver bream.
The Waranga Basin is still fishing very well for reddies when it is not too windy. Best methods being trolling small type lures in around 15ft of water. Fish are averaging up to 2 lb. Also the Main Eastern irrigation channel is producing some reddies.
Bendigo Area
Brought to you from Kevin Dieckman at Henderson's Canvas & Fishing,
Ph 54438266.
Lake Eppalock is starting to pick up with lures being the preferred option and fish being caught around the weir area on Mann's lures.
Cairn Curran Reservoir is producing Reddie's but they are tending to become smaller in size. A month ago fish were reaching up to 4 1/2 - 5lb but now a good fish will only go around 2-1/2 lb mark.
RECOMMENDED HOT SPOT
For Murray cod try the top end of Lake Mulwala or below Boundary Bend. For yellas I would be trying below Yarrawonga Weir to Tocumwal and for reddies have a look Lake Nillahcootie, the Waranga Basin or Kangaroo Lake.
UPCOMING EVENTS
This weekend we have the NFA comp at Yarrawonga followed by the Picola comp at Barmah Lakes, Mathoura Comp, Horsham comp, Mulwala Classic, the Media Challenge at Lake Purrambeet, Yarrawonga/Mulwala Angling Club comp and the big comp at Echuca/Moama in late April. Anyone needing more info can give me a call on 03 57441667 and I'll be happy to help them out.
I extend a warm welcome to all NFA members who are coming to Yarrawonga/Mulwala this weekend for their annual comp. I wish them all the best and hope they all catch a fish smaller than me.
