Hi and welcome to another week of fishing around Geelong. Well as the rain and the crappy cold weather moves on another good friend of theirs (the wind) has moved in for a bit, and ever since he got here the wind has done nothing but party. In most cases this is reason for concern, it stops most fishos from leaving the comfort of their homes, but not this time. Lucky for us a majority of the winds are from the west and that leaves sheltered bays to fish. (Let's Go Fishing!)
Corio Bay
The Bay has been a bit hard to fish of late but at last it's starting to fish better. Daniel Stranger has been putting in the hard yards and so far is catching snapper averaging 4kg. The better spots to try are Bird Rock and the Quarries through to Pt Wilson and even the 9-Foot Bank or the old Turn Area at Pt Henry is worth a look. Best Bait is 'couta or whiting heads, 'couta fillet or pilchards and squid. But I must say mid a.m. is best. If the snapper is not your cup of tea try a simple drift to catch some nice small flathead.
Grammar School Lagoon
Fishing the rising tide in the entrance to the lagoon is worth a look. Using a good amount of berley there is a fair chance you will come home with a good mixed bag of fish. Bream, trevally, mullet and flathead are all on the menu, although I do suggest that you use live shrimp or Bass yabbies if you wish to target bream - for the other fish pippi or pilchards will do fine.
Wheat Silos
Fishos fishing in the boat or on land are catching nice bream, trevally, and mullet. You will need berley but it's a worthwhile spot, more so just after the ship leaves. As the massive amount of wheat spills and dust dissipates the fish begin to search for food again and your berley trail is a good start.
Cunningham Pier
I have had no reports from this area except for small mullet but if my diary is accurate we should get a run of pinky snapper around the Yarra Street end in the next few weeks.
Bellarine Peninsula
This is an easy report this week, so I will put them all together. Both Portarlington and St Leonards have schools of small salmon about on the rising tide. At St Leonards there are a few whiting being caught on whitebait. The best lures for the salmon are the small Lofty's Salt Water Lures. And across the board there are plenty of squid, especially big stuff - some have been up to 3.4kg in size.
In Swan Bay gummies up to 8kg are on the chew and in Lakers Cutting bream at 32cm average are being caught on Bass yabbies. Bellarine Bait and Tackle proprietors Geoff and Shirley Green in Drysdale, on the way to St Leonards (Murodoch Road), are offering a 10% discount if you mention the FishVictoria Radio Show. Surf Coast
Things are quiet although they are starting to see a few trevally and bream in the Barwon estuary as the water begins to clear after recent rains. And at Angelsea there are heaps of bream being caught on Bass yabbies and soft plastics. The Squidgy 65cm Blood Worm Wriggler is best.
Regards,
John Didge.
