Before we get into the report, I just want to let you all know we have a brand new website up and going at www.ausfishing.com.au. It's a great site and if anyone wants to join up to the newsletter sent bi-monthly, you can join free on the front home page.

Narooma
The local beaches have fired up with reports of big salmon to 4kg being caught on bluebait, pilchards and surf poppers. Most of these fish are coming from the southern beaches with Tilba, 1080 and Narooma main the picks. Best time seems to be early mornings with a rising tide with a few of the gutters at present in pretty close to the beach break. I know the gutter at Tilba is quite deep so fishing for a jewie or gummy shark over the next few weeks with the moon starting to rise is certainly worth a go. Fresh squid and tailor fillets would be the preferred baits.

In the estuaries, Wagonga Inlet is pretty quiet and August is always the quietest month of the year. The water is a chilly 11 degrees and crystal clear, making fishing difficult. Anglers that are doing okay have downsized their tackle to very light leaders and jigheads where practical, and are fishing the shallower margins up the back of the system. The water is still clear up here but some big flathead and decent bream have been captured. Fishos using fresh bait in the channels have done okay with a few bream and big silver trevally around. Fishing the run-out tide has been best with a few of the old-timers getting amongst some quality blackfish along the training walls and southern wall of the bar entrance.

Outside has been good for snapper and that's about it. We got some good reds their a week or so ago with some fish hitting 5kg. The spot to fish is Potato Point and the reefs off Tuross. Best baits have been fresh squid, pilchards and bonito cubes.

Merimbula
Fishing great guns in the estuaries with both Merimbula and Pambula lakes firing up. Good flathead, bream and trevally can be expected, with anglers using soft plastics having better sucess. Concentrating in the shallower water has been the go, with smaller presentations fished slowly being a must. There's been a few tailor in both lakes, but not in any numbers or size at the minute. That should change as we head into September, and there might be the odd mulloway following the tailor schools also. At the Bega River its been a little hit and miss, but when you get a good day the bream fishing has been very good. Plastics and hard-bodies have done the trick with the fish quite widespread throughout the system. Offshore there's been reports of good flathead off the Pambula River mouth, and a few snapper on the inshore reefs, but over all pretty quiet.

Mallacoota
Just got back from 4 days fishing down there and it was very good. We managed 60 odd bream up to 1.60kg, with around 20 of those pushing the kilo mark and over. All fish were taken on lures, with hard-bodies and plastics sharing the load. Again we caught fish pretty much everywhere within the system with the deeper water and creeks producing the bigger fish. The flathead were a bit quiet but we didn't spend much time on them, and the ones we got were on the smaller side also. This place will continue to fish well over coming weeks and I for one will be heading back down their pretty soon.

Quality bream like these two models is what Mallacoota's all about.
