Apollo Bay and

What a summer!
I can't believe how good the weather has been to us over the new year period, with heaps of people taking advantage of the flat conditions. Unfortunately this is my busy work season and I have been stuck in the shop every day serving the happy customers.
I did sneak out for a fish with Matt Learmonth while he was in town and after a long trip to the lighthouse realised that his sea sickness problem hadn't got any better since last year. So, while fishing in the confines of the boat harbour we managed a fine haul of fresh calamari and then ventured out onto the high seas for a quick whiting fish. It took us a little while to locate any whiting but once we found where they had been hiding we quickly landed 8 medium sized fish before Matt turned green again.
After dropping Matt back on land my mate Thomo and his son Hunter came out for a shot at a few whiting. Already knowing were they were hiding, I put us straight onto some fish and Hunter and Thomo had a ball landing some thumping big KGW and losing a few as well.

Andrew Thomas and his son Hunter had a ball catching these
whiting while fishing with Kenty.
OFFSHORE
The sharks are about in good numbers out in 70m of water. While most of them are blue sharks there has been a few small makos landed as well. Dale March from Apollo Bay hooked onto a massive blue which he tussled with for over two hours before it got the better of him. Check out the pic!

Dale March took this pic of a big blue shark while fishing wide off Blanket Bay.
INSHORE
King George whiting are keeping anglers happy around the inshore reefs. Marengo, the golf course, and Eliot River are all fishing well and Mark Garrett landed an absolute beast measuring in at 61cm! Mark said he caught 7 whiting and all of them were over 50cm, now that's some big fillets.
WILD DOG BEACH
The salmon run will start in about 1 months time but for now there have been lots of small fish being landed from the deeper gutters. Pipis or squid will give the best results.
BOAT HARBOUR
Plenty of squid in the harbour, but getting them to bite can be a real pain. Use small jigs in 2.5 size or smaller and move them very slowly. Early morning is the best time to target these flighty squid.
AIRE RIVER
Some good bream have come out of the Aire this summer with bait being the preferred method of capture. Prawns and worms are great baits when fished unweighted and I only use a sinker if the river is flowing out to sea.
BARHAM RIVER
I have noticed some patches of algae in the river after some very hot days this summer, although as I write we have received some much needed rain. If the river gets a good flush out it will fish well for bream around the Great Ocean Road bridge. Both lures and bait work well in this part of the river so keep experimenting until you land a fish.
Don't forget the Great Ocean Sports Festival "Big Catch Fishing Comp" this 9th of February at Apollo Bay. See you there!
Regards,
Daniel Kent.
