Alpine High Country
10 October 2003
With Geoff Lacey
of Angling Expeditions Victoria.
The weather has improved a lot this week, with river and stream flows slowly dropping and running clear, making conditions perfect for all types of fishing. Not many anglers are about at the moment, but that should change soon.
The Kiewa River is producing nice brown trout to 400 grams during the day on big bunches of earthworms on a size 6 hook under a running sinker rig. Best results were obtained by anglers fishing into the heads of pools.
Anglers fishing the Mt Beauty pondage at the weekend took three rainbow trout that went 550 grams each on average using worms fished on a light rig under a bubble float. Best location for fishing was to the left of the rotunda on the wall.
The upper Mitta Mitta River at Anglers Rest is flowing well and producing nice brown trout for anglers using worms as bait fished under a light running sinker. The Bundara and Cobungra rivers are also in fine mettle with conditions ideal for fishing.
The lower Mitta Mitta River at Mitta Mitta is flowing at medium level, with lots of trout caught this week around the Mitta Caravan Park area on worms. The Dartmouth pondage is fishing exceptionally well on worms in the shallows, with the overflow from Dartmouth reservoir still discharging at full strength. The Snowy Creek is also flowing well, although no fishing reports are to hand.
Summing up, the weather is improving and stream levels are dropping and trout are being caught on worms.
That's all for now, more next time.
