With Paul Pingiaro from:
Mornington Boat Hire, and
Track Air Adventures

Squid, snapper, whiting and garfish are the flavour of the week for Mornington.

Anglers fishing from Schnapper Point Boat Hire have managed to bag snapper to 13 pounds, with most fish in the 4-8 pound range. The best baits have been silver whiting, Californian squid and garfish. The best spots have been B’ Buoy, Ansetts, the Hospital, 16 metre line and Fisherman's Beach.

For those fishing off the pier at Mornington, mullet, squid and garfish have all been on the go, with the odd salmon and 'couta thrown in for good measure. The anglers fishing off the Fisherman's Wharf have been bagging some lovely King George whiting. The best baits have been sandworm and Bass yabbies.

I fished off Mornington on Wednesday and the weather was not kind. I did however manage to catch a couple of small seven-gill sharks on the Rig Mans Snapper Flasher rigs (Snapper Snatcher style rigs).

John Soloman is catching some lovely snapper to 4 kilograms up the top end of the bay. His tip is that the early bird catches the worm! The best bait has been pilchards fished with a running sinker rig.

For those heading down to the southern peninsula there are a few good gummies in the channels as well as some nice whiting around the weed beds. The best bait for the whiting is fresh squid, pipis, and mussels, while the gummy sharks are best targeted with fresh salmon, trevally and eel fillets.

There are some good schools of salmon about the rip as well as the odd kingfish, and a few crays for those going for a dive.

For those wanting a Western Port gummy, Doug and John have been bagging some rippers to 7ft out of West Head, as well as some nice flathead and pinkies. Their bait of choice has been squid.

Some nice bream have been caught from Balcombe Creek, the best method has been to fish lightly weighted shrimp rigged on a no. 6 hook.

Tight Lines and Blue Skies,

Paul
