Rig with berley cage
From Peter Jolly
Here's a rig that's been popular with anglers catching live bait for bigger species such as mulloway, as well as for other fishing situations. It's pretty much the rig behind the coarse fishing method, cage about 500-1000 mm above the hook of size 12-14 with two or three maggots on it. The maggots fall out of the cage and float down stream and bring the fish to the bait, sort of a self contained berley/bait system.
A float can be used above the cage, if the need arises, and may be set to allow the bait to drop down to any depth needed. Pencil floats work well as they have less resistance when the fish takes the bait.
The maggots don't smell if they are kept in a mixture of bran and/or sawdust in the fridge to stop them from hatching into flys. The rig can also be used with sandworm where you place a worm on the hook and pieces of worm in the cage.
Some of the fish that have been taken on this rig are trout, redfin, cod, bream, mullet, trevally, pinky snapper, garfish, and there's plenty more that can be caught. Long rods are the preferred choice when using this setup, especially light tipped rods as some of the fish are very small and are light biters.
