How do you breed bardi grubs?
Matthew McDonald writes:
I've got the big moths with heaps of eggs but I don't know what to do now. Do I put the eggs under a gum tree and wait (how long)? Can I put them in a bucket with decomposing wood on the bottom and with dirt on top, so to harvest easier? Any answers or directions to answers would be great. Ta, Matt.

Alan McFayden replies:
The best way to get bardi grubs is to select the edge of red gum trees on a sandy rise. You have to remove the top layer of soil under the overhanging gum trees, they must be gum trees. You will see some holes about the size of your little finger and if there is a brown "fresh looking" cocoon layer on the inside there should be a grub down about two feet or similar in depth. If there is just the dirt hole forget it as it will be last years and the occupant long gone. You will need a length of speedo or similar cable with screw wire on the end. Lower until you feel the grub then turn it around until the grub is on the end then slowly pull out. They make great bait and should be kept cool until used. They keep well in a cigarette packet foil in the fridge. They should keep for months like this. Regards, Alan.
