Are maggots goot bait for garfish?

Brian writes:
Hi everyone, I was going fishing for gars on the weekend and I want to use maggots for bait. Are maggots good bait for garfish and if so could any one tell me where to get them, or how to make them myself (preferably a clean, not too smelly way would be better). Thanks in advance, Brian.

Henry replies:
Hello Brian. Yes maggots are probably the best garfish bait I know of and are available through the major fishing specialists, particularly those who carry gear for coarse fishing. I have a small book called Coarse Fishing In Australia by G.S. Walker. It's not an expensive book and I have found it very informative and it gives a good and clean method for growing your own maggots. Hope this helps. Henry.

Frank Gardner replies:
Hi Brian, re maggots for garfish, I find them an excellent bait. You can buy them at any tackle shop or better still breed your own. Just place some beef heart in a plastic container, partly cover with bran and put down the backyard out of the rain, it will take about a week for the maggots to appear. Allow a few days to reach a good size, tip onto some fine mesh. Maggots hate the light so will wriggle through and can be placed in a container covered with fresh bran and stored in bottom of fridge (I have a very understanding wife)... hope this is of some help. Frank.
