How can I catch some squid?

Brian Chamberlain writes:
What is the best way and the most likely spots to fish for squid? Thanks.

Dazza replies:
Brian, I'm only new to squid fishing myself, but having caught my first one the other week, here's what you gotta do. Go and buy yourself a few squid jigs. The colours are blue, pink, orange and green. Depending on how many you wanna buy, you can get small, medium or large ones. (I bought TEN from the fishing show!!!!) For some reason, everyone says that "Yo-Zuri" jigs are the best, but I've been reading in the FishVic reports, that "Yamashita" jigs are working OK too. Some sizes and colours may work one day, and then totally different the next time. So you should have a bit of a selection. From a boat, you should drift aross the reefs, in water between 3 and 6 metres deep, and let the jig drift back behind the boat, and then give it a yank every 10 seconds or so, to bring it back and allow some slack, and keep that up. When fishing from a pier, I would think you possibly use a float. Good luck.

What is the best method of catching squid with a squid jig? Is it spinning or just letting it sit there? What colours?? All answers will be greatly helpful.

Vass replies:
I have been fishing for squid for many years and the best method for me has been to cast and retrieve jigs. What I do is minimize the sinking capacity by cutting half the sinker off and allowing the jig to sink very slowly. When almost to the botton begin a very slow retrieve with a short jerk then pause to let the jig sink again. I use a size 2 jig of any brand and have found blue and green to be the most productive. Hope this helps and good squiding.

Hello Brian, have a look at the following site "www.squidfish.net". I think it will give you a few ideas. Good luck.
