How do I choose the right sinker for snapper?
Bill writes:
I've been in a dilemma the past few weeks when it comes to selecting the correct weighted sinker for snapper fishing. I have been told by many that no sinker should be used and by others that a light sinker is necessary for the bait to reach the bottom. Can someone please clarify when fishing off a boat (Port Philip Bay), when you should use a sinker and when not too? Also, how do you determine that the bait is reaching the bottom and not floating somewhere inbetween? Thanks for your response in advance.

Peter Jolly replies:
90 percent of the time I don't use sinkers at all. If the tide is running I will use a ball sinker from the size of a marble to the size of a pea depending on the force the water is putting on the line.
A spread of weights can be used on a few lines to fish one on the bottom, one off the bottom and one mid water- depending on what line gets hit with what weight you pull the others up and put the same weight on all of them.
There are a couple of ways to do it, my favorite is to use an easyrig clip on the line going all the way to the bait or to a swivel about 1 metre from the bait. With the use of the easyrig you can take all the weight off or put it on. The location makes a difference also, if you fish near the Yarra at Port Melbourne and the tide is on the way out you need a sinker to keep the bait down, perhaps not on the bottom but enough to keep it from floating to the suface, some areas of Geelong are the same.
If you need the weight use it, if you don't need the weight to keep the bait down then don't use it. It is up to you and whatever you feel comfortable with in the conditions you are fishing.
