Beginner wants to catch fish over summer.

Luke writes:
I am only twelve and I have only fished for 1 year. I would like to know if you can catch anything during the day off the shore during summer? I have only got a small cast, and I LOVE fishing. See ya.

Harry replies:
Luke, yes you can catch all sorts of great fish in the middle of the day even from the shore... just don't forget the sunscreen and hat. Whiting, bream and flathead are all good species to target as well as John Dory and others around the local pier. Don't worry about having a short cast either. Some of the best fish I've caught have been caught less than 5 meters from shore... ever noticed how some people will have a great big expensive boat and go fishing only 10 meters from shore? That's because the fish are close to the shore and they only have to cast short distances too!

Get mum or dad to take you to a tackle shop in your area and ask them about how to rig up for these fish in your area. You'll find if you are buying a few hooks, sinkers, swivels and a bit of bait, you can usually get them to spend a few minutes teaching you how to catch a few fish with it all.

Spend time reading and studying the habits of your target fish to learn about them. This will save you a lot of time and trouble for no return. Better still check out the local fishing club scene and see if they have a junior membership or fishing courses for kids over the school holidays. Enjoy your fishing over the coming years and never ever ever give up. All the best.
