Does line colour make a difference?

Moose writes:
I mainly fish from rocks at local beaches and I am wondering if there is a specific colour line that is best to use in salt water. I have seen people use coloured line and clear line and I am wondering if it makes any difference?

I've always found that the only time line colour makes any real difference is to the angler. If you're looking for a line that is easier to see for your own purposes then go for a brighter flourescent colour. This is handy when you want to see your line at a quick glance such as when trolling, lure casting or presenting live baits into snag country. Could be important when fishing the rocks too.

I mostly use the yellow flouro lines such as the platypus one for that reason. Plus some of my braid lines are flouro for spinnerbaiting. I don't think it's particularly important when bait fishing flats, etc.

Remember though that some fish can be really skittish at anything unusual so use a clear mono or better still, a flourocarbon leader to keep your bait or lure presentation clean when that's important. You'll find it will probably improve your catch rates by simply letting you know your bait or lure is out of the more productive zones you're trying to fish. Tight lines.

I mostly use the pink fluoro line from Maxima and I have never had any problem in either fresh or saltwater getting fish to take the bait - trout, redfin, cod, yellowbelly, bream, snapper, blah, blah, blah - have all taken the pink stuff I use. Apparently reds are one of the colours in the spectrum that fades to grey under water.
