How do I set my drag for snapper?
Mark writes:
Hi, I have been trying to catch snapper for 2 years now and continue to come home empty handed. I know I have the right bait and rigs but I just cannot find the fish. I recently headed out off Carrum and had a run but missed it due to the drag being too lose. I hear that some people fish with their drag reasonably tight. I am used to fishing with a light drag and using a baitrunner. If anybody can give me some advice on how to set my drag for fishing Port Phillip (Carrum, Seaford, etc.) it will be much appreciated, regards Mark.

Hi Mark, when I cast I have the drag on loose and when the fish bites I don't set the hook straight away, I let the fish swallow it a bit first then I set the hook and tighten the drag to suit the fighting ability of the fish on the end of my line. Hope this helps.

Mark, if you check out the hints and tips section under tackle and equipment, I've outlined how to set your drag correctly, along with a few tips on how to get your drag system into tip top shape for fighting those snapper. Tight lines.
