Beginner needs help with surf and rock fishing, etc.

Shane Lenehan writes:
I have only recently taken up fishing and was after information on all the different types of fish, what bait to use, what rig, etc. I live on the coast in south west Victoria so I will be fishing off rocks, surf fishing, small boat fishing and also in rivers. Do you have the info I'm after or would I be better off buying a book/books for the information? If so , can you reccommend any good ones please? Thanking you in anticipation, Shane Lenehan.

Hi Shane, there's certainly a wealth of information on fishvictoria.com. I would recommend starting with the saltwater fish files and also the Tips sections. Good luck. Regards, Matt.

I am just getting involved in surf fishing and I will be using lures and bait. What are the best baits and rigs to use? Also, where do you cast your bait? I have read about channels, troughs and reading the beach, but I don't understand. Can anybody please clear this up for me?

G'day Craig, I found myself in the same predicament a couple of years ago. The key I believe to quality surf or rock fishing, depending on the targetted fish, is preparation and knowledge of where you will be fishing. Seek out a local tackle store and ask them about the area and what has been working there. Look for tell tale signs on the beach at low tide, including rock formations, foaming white water and birds overhead. Also, don't forget to cast close to the shore, as predator fish often lie in waiting for fish like mullet and tommy rough who frequent close in areas for a feed. I find using a simple paternoster rig and running sinker onto a metre-long leader to be the best rig. Best of luck with your efforts, Jarred.
