Some offenders DO get caught!
David Moore writes:
I have just read Peter Jolly's weekend pro fishing report on fishvictoria.com. I was disgusted to find out through the report that there were illegal netters in the Werribee River. At the same time, I was very happy that these scum bags were caught.
It's people like this that stuff up the fishing for everyone because not only do they take/kill the undersize fish (that have never reproduced), but also they take many, if not all of the current breeders to stuff up the river for the longer term.
I hope that the book is thrown at these gutless criminals who lurk around at night and if you are one of these criminals or if you conduct these sort of activities, then you deserve what you get.

Extract from Peter Jolly's report of 20 July:
"What can I say about the Werribee River? Well, guess what, there was an illegal netting operation caught here during the week They had a large amount of BIG bream. When you consider that a 30cm bream is probably about 12-16 years old they have taken a huge chunk of the spawning population out of the system. There are still a few smaller fish near the boats but please, if you get a good sized fish consider throwing it back to aid the recovery of the river. I would be thinking that this area has now been rendered almost useless as a good bream fishing spot."
