Fisheries Officers Target the Warmies at Newport
From Fisheries Victoria Fish-Fax Issue 43, 26 July 2001
In May, Melbourne Fisheries Officers conducted an enforcement blitz at the mouth of the Yarra River at Newport, after reports that recreational anglers were taking undersized bream and tailor.
Operation 'Boiling Point' inspected more than 400 anglers, of which 71 were found to have committed offences. Fisheries Officers issued 34 $100 Penalty Infringement Notices (PIN) and 31 official warnings.
A further six men were charged on summons to appear in court in relation to four separate incidents of taking large quantities of undersized fish and exceeding bag limits. Fishing equipment, including rods and tackle boxes, were seized from these men.
A second enforcement blitz at the Warmies was undertaken in July. Fisheries Officers inspected 161 anglers, of which 47 were found to have committed offences. 13 of these received an official warning, 30 were issued with a PIN and 4 will be charged on summons to appear in court for taking undersized fish and exceeding the bag limit.
