Bostock Reservoir - Ballan

19 February 2006, David Cassar
Location: Bostock Reservoir Time: 7.30am-10.30am
Type of Water: Lake Type of Fishing: Shore
Target Fish: Trout, redfin
Bait\Lure\Fly: Royal Wulf fly
Fish Caught:

1 x redfin @ 14 cm

Comments: The water level is extremely low. Most of the banks are very boggy. Fish were jumping all morning but wouldn't grab my fly. Possibly my fault as I am a very inexperienced fly fisherman. All of the fish jumping seemed to be redfin and there were some big fish. Still I had fun and this little bugger was my first fish on a fly. Best place to fish is the steep rocky bank on the oposite side of the lake to the BBQ's. It is deep and the banks are firm, unlike the rest of the lake. Worth a look early morning.

Location: Bostock Reservoir Time: 5pm-8pm
Type of Water: Lake Type of Fishing: Shore
Target Fish: Redfin, brown, rainbow trout
Bait\Lure\Fly: Garden worms, spinners
Fish Caught:

2 x redfin @ 20cm
2 x redfin @ 10cm

Comments: Not much happening at the lake, no one else seemed to catch anything. If you go to the lake watch your step on the muddy edges (I nearly lost my foot).

Type of Water: Lake Type of Fishing: Shore
Target Fish: Trout, redfin, eel
Bait\Lure\Fly: Various lures, worms
Fish Caught:

1 x redfin @ 4 inches

Comments: Almost bone dry! Only decent water was near the walls. Lots of people fishing, but only small redfin biting. Strong easterly wind.

Location: Bostock Reservoir Time: 6.30am-12pm
Type of Water: Lake Type of Fishing: Shore
Target Fish: Trout, redfin
Bait\Lure\Fly: Scrub & garden worms, corn, mussel, maggots
Fish Caught:

6 x redfin @ all small

Comments: Not much water at Bostock, it's extremely low (shame). Had a great time catching these little reddies. The only bait they took was the worms and maggots. While I was shifting positions up the bank, I went back to collect my second rod to find a reddie hooked. Brought him in and the little bugger had swallowed both hooks chockers with maggots, he swam away quite happy with an absolute mouthfull. Thank you to Jonathan for the location advice to reach Bostock.

Location: Bostock Reservoir Time: 5pm-8.30pm
Type of Water: Lake Type of Fishing: Shore
Target Fish: Trout, redfin
Bait\Lure\Fly: Scrub worms
Fish Caught:

3 x Redfin @ 0.5lb

Comments: Quite a few people around the lake, most didn't seem to catch much. I Don't know how much longer this reservoir will have water in it. At 2.5% capacity at the beginning of summer things don't look good. Hopefully we get some rain, or Barwon water stop draining it! (See photo in Gallery section).

Location: Bostock Reservoir Time: 9am-2pm
Type of Water: Lake Type of Fishing: Shore
Target Fish: Trout, redfin
Bait\Lure\Fly: Worms, minnows, spinners
Fish Caught:

1 x redfin @ 400g

Comments: The conditions were very windy. Caught the redfin on the minnow on the bottom and there were a lot of little redfin following the spinner. The guy next to us caught a 1kg redfin before we got there.
