The cod were big back in the good old days
From: Peter Tremain
Many years ago a group of fishermen were yarning over a few beers in the Railway Hotel in Wodonga. The topic was big fish we had caught. I was only a young bloke then and loved to hear the stories of the 'old fellas' who had fished the rivers 'back in the good old days'.
The stories of 15lb trout and 100lb cod we told, with graphic details of what baits or lures were used, how long the fight took and the degree of difficulty of the various fish.
One old fisho, Murray Coonan, was particularly quiet during all the beer bragardo. He was a cod fisherman of local renown and it was unusual that he hadn't chipped in with one of his famous yarns.
He quitely sipped his diet ale, while perched on his stool in his special spot at the bar, with his eyes cast toward the ceiling, looking very bored.
Finally one of the other drinkers said to him, "Murray! You're pretty quiet over there, what's the biggest fish you ever caught?"
The crowd went quiet as Murray quietly placed his beer on the bar and held both palms out in front of him, and with pursed lips showing great consideration, measured about 2 feet between them (that's about 600mm in today's measure).
"That's not much of a bloody cod Murray! All the time you bin fishin', ya must a caught one bigger than that!", one of the crew scorned.
"Well, it's like this", said Murray with great patience for the inexperienced fisho, and quietly explained, "I only ever measure my cod between their eyes."
