Revenge of the pier fishermen
From: Marco

One evening last summer after just getting my licence, myself and Andy decided we had enough of just hanging around at home and decided to head to Warneet pier for a bit of fun on those monster rays.

We had two 24kg rods out and two bait runners spooled with 10kg line. In the last hours of sunlight we had 3 runs in an hour, however 2 were on the bait runners which nearly spooled me and the other on the big rod which busted me off on one of the buoys.

Then at about 7pm I got into a big one on my bait runner and was fed up with losing them and so braced myself for a long fight. Met 2 other guys on there and a poor chap who also hooked up to a ray on a Kmart telescopic rod and thought he could bring it in. While walking towards the end of the pier he was trying to dodge our rods we had out. Then the poor guy tripped over Andy's tackle box and smacked his head on the railing and lost his rod in the water.

In the mean time... I was still onto my ray and to cut a long story short 2 and a half hours later my arms were starting to drop off and the lactic acid had well and truly set. However, this beast was slowly coming in. Two steps back and then 2 steps forward with quick winds. That was the only techinque to get it in. All we wanted to do was have a look at the size of this 'thing' and take a quick photo or two.

Then, it all happened.

It was only about 20 metres from the pier and was starting to surface when we saw a houseboat thing coming towards us. At first I dismissed my first thoughts and thought, nah, they won't come this close and then... yep you guessed it, they got closer and closer and we were signalling to them to go out a bit.

The idiots went right over my line and spooked the ray. I'm not sure whether they cut my line or the ray just took off and snapped the line, but we were fuming.

The driver gave us the birdie and laughed. I couldn't feel my arms and it was all to no avail. Luckily I had my sinker tin with me and that boat copped at least 30 8 and 10 oz sinkers. Everyone ran inside and let us just say, we found our aim.

Small consolation but was an interesting night to say the least.
