A lucky escape in a canoe
From: Michael norton
I have a funny/sad/dangerous story to tell. Me and a friend (both 16 years old) went out fishing in a small 2 man canoe recently, we had caught a few pinkies and flatties when I spotted some baitfish action nearby, we paddled over and cast into the school.
After a few misses I hooked something large and after it gave me a little curry I had it in the canoe, it was a flatty of about 50cm. I decided to keep him, and as I was taking the hook out I felt unbalanced, a large boat had gone by and the wake spilled into the sides of the canoe.
Then the canoe rolled and my tackle box, and the rod my friend was holding, went to the bottom. I held onto my favourite ($250) rod with the fish on the end as the canoe started to go under, we both swam it to the surface but it had no boyancy so it was floating about 1 foot under the water.
Luckily we had life jackets on and we were safe although cold. I bit my prize fish off the line and vowed to catch him another day.
As I was swimming the canoe, I let go of my other rod somehow. We started to swim the canoe some 800 metres back to shore. We spotted a fishing boat and yelled and held a paddle in the air. He came and helped us and towed us into shore.
I realise that this could have been a dangerous situation, and we are not going to attempt it again anytime soon.
I have learnt my lesson and I now only have hand reels to fish with, oh well, back to the basics I guess.
