Macquarie
perch can only be taken from Lake Dartmouth, the Yarra River and the
Upper Coliban Reservoir and their tributaries. The taking of Macquarie
perch in all other Victorian waters is prohibited.
Note: a total bag/possession limit of 40 fish applies to all scale fish species.
CLOSED SEASON: 1 October to 31 December. Landed whole or as a carcass.
The
taking of Macquarie perch is now limited to 3 main areas in Victoria
due to its endangered status and listing under the Victorian Flora and
Fauna Guarantee Act. It is totally protected in New South Wales. A shy
fish requiring quiet stealth from the angler, Macqaurie perch are
bottom to mid-water dwellers in slow rivers with deep holes and are not
at all territorial. Its reduced numbers are thought to be mainly due to
introduced species and the building of weirs and dams which have
restricted the spawning grounds for these fish.
Another good fish for correct handling and release techniques.
SIZE: Often to 25cm although can grow to 46cm and 3.5kg.
WHERE:
In Victoria the Macquarie perch can only be legally fished from Lake
Dartmouth, the Yarra River and the Upper Coliban Reservoir and their
tributaries. They will most likely be found alongside weed beds,
sloping sand banks and amongst underwater snags. These fish also
dislike hot summer sun and seek the shade of overhanging banks and
foliage. They are a popular target in the Yarra River around Warrandyte.
TACKLE: No. 4 hook on a 2-4kg line with a running sinker stopped a metre from the hook.
BAIT: Worms, mudeyes, small jigged spoons and small lures or trout flies.
BITE: Can play with the bait for some time before taking it. Tentative biters.
EATING: Good table fish.
