The first shipment of chinook salmon from America to Victoria was made
in 1874 but the eggs hatched during the voyage and the entire shipment
was lost. The first successful shipment was in 1877 however many of
those early attempts failed due to releasing the salmon into waters
with access to the sea. Greater regulation of chinook stocking and
catching has allowed this fish to become a popular sporting target in a
small number of locations.
SIZE: Land-locked fish are considerably smaller than their salt/freshwater counterparts. Inland catches generally to 1kg.
WHERE: Victorian waters stocked with chinook salmon include Lake Bullen Merri at Camperdown and Murdeduke Lake at Winchelsea.
