Originally from Europe, the brown trout is regarded as the most
difficult to catch of all trouts. It is a cautious and wary feeder and
needs to be stalked with stealth and cunning.
SIZE: Up to 6kg, more commonly from 0.5-2kg.
WHERE:
Cool and clean lakes, dams and river systems in alpine and higher areas
of the State. Many alpine areas have been stocked with brown trout.
TACKLE: Light tackle rigged for bait or lures although this fish is perhaps more popular with fly fishing devotees.
BAIT: Mudeyes, earthworms, yabbies, live crickets and grasshoppers as well as a variety of lures and flies.
BITE: A cautious feeder that will fight strongly when hooked.
EATING: Excellent quality table fish.
