Trout, rainbow Print E-mail
AKA: bows, rainbows, steelhead, sea-run trout.
MINIMUM LEGAL SIZE: no minimum.
BAG/POSSESSION LIMIT: various salmonid bag/possession limits apply in different waters, see Salmon & Trout Regulations. Landed whole or as a carcass. Note: a total bag/possession limit of 40 fish applies to all scale fish species.
CLOSED SEASON: yes, see Salmon & Trout Regulations.

A native of America, the rainbow trout thrives in fast-flowing mountain streams. This trout also needs artificial stocking to keep its numbers up as it spawns after the brown trout and the results are less successful.

SIZE: Up to 6kg, more commonly from 1-2kg.

WHERE: Cool and clean lakes, dams and river systems in alpine and higher areas of the State. Prefers fast-flowing, highly oxygenated waters. Likes deep pools with cover from overhanging foliage.

TACKLE: Light tackle rigged for bait or lures although this fish is perhaps more popular with fly fishing devotees.

BAIT: Mudeyes, earthworms and yabbies as well as a variety of lures and flies.

EATING: Very good quality table fish, perhaps not as prized as the brown trout.
