Ling (all species) Print E-mail
AKA: beardies.
MINIMUM LEGAL SIZE: 33cm.
BAG/POSSESSION LIMIT: no species-specific limit.
Note: a total bag/possession limit of 40 fish applies to all scale fish species.

A member of the cod family, ling are eel-like fish found around rocky locations. The ling and the rock cod are the two true members of the cod family mainly caught in Victorian waters.
Fish such as Murray cod, black rock cod, blue cod, coral cod, scorpion cod, spotted cod and humpback cod, to name a few, are not cod at all but members of other families. Along with the ling and the rock cod, true members of the cod family in Europe include haddock, hake and English whiting (no relation to Australian whiting).

SIZE: Can grow to a metre though most are caught in the 35-40cm range.

WHERE: Many rocky locations around Victoria’s coastline.

EATING: The most common ling caught has flabby flesh and is not good eating. Some varieties of ling are reasonable table fish although their appearance tends to prevent many from trying them.
