A
member of the cod family, ling are eel-like fish found around rocky
locations. The ling and the rock cod are the two true members of the
cod family mainly caught in Victorian waters.
Fish such as Murray
cod, black rock cod, blue cod, coral cod, scorpion cod, spotted cod and
humpback cod, to name a few, are not cod at all but members of other
families. Along with the ling and the rock cod, true members of the cod
family in Europe include haddock, hake and English whiting (no relation
to Australian whiting).
SIZE: Can grow to a metre though most are caught in the 35-40cm range.
WHERE: Many rocky locations around Victoria’s coastline.
EATING:
The most common ling caught has flabby flesh and is not good eating.
Some varieties of ling are reasonable table fish although their
appearance tends to prevent many from trying them.
