Another
popular gamefish, the tailor inhabit surf beaches, rocky headland and
islands. Although more abundant further north, tailor in Victorian
waters still provide exciting sport when hooked. Tailor will often leap
into the air and thrash its head from side to side once the hook is set.
SIZE: Seldom exceeds 4kg.
WHERE:
Coastal waters particularly to the east, can often be found tearing up
the surface under a flock of circling sea birds who dive for remnants
of the tailors chopped up prey.
TACKLE: Ganged hooks of 4/0 or 5/0 size with a wire trace.
BAIT: Pilchards, garfish, yellowtail, whole fish baits and lures including spoons and plastic wriggling lures and jigs.
BITE:
An eager biter, tailor have razor-sharp teeth but soft mouths and so
need to be handled with sensitivity once on the line. The will either
rush in and grab the bait or repeatedly pick it up, shake it and then
drop it.
EATING: Good table quality.
